The beginning of the school year is always such an exciting time. It's when school staff come back together after the summer, ready to inspire and support our students, and when students return eager to reconnect with their classmates. Our campuses are filled with energy, and thanks to engaging classroom activities and vibrant after-school programs, there is so much to look forward to in the months ahead.
However, as we begin to reflect on the first quarter of the school year, it is important to acknowledge the challenges our community has faced. Hurricane Helene has impacted many areas of Florida, and I hope that you and your loved ones are safe. Times like these remind us of the strength of our community, and I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has stepped up to help their neighbors and lend a hand. Whether you volunteered your time, provided resources, or simply offered a kind word, your support is what makes our community truly remarkable.
As we near the end of the first quarter, we’ve already seen many impressive achievements. Five of our high school seniors have been named National Merit Program semifinalists, placing them among the top 1% of the Class of 2025. This spring, they’ll find out if they’re selected to receive $2,500 scholarships. Additionally, 148 students earned prestigious College Board recognitions, which provide academic honors that will enhance their college and scholarship applications. We also celebrate the 27 students who earned AP Capstone Diplomas, 167 who earned International Baccalaureate Diplomas, and 368 who earned AICE Cambridge Diplomas this year. These challenging programs help students earn college credit and set them up for future success.
Our schools thrive because of the continued involvement of families and the broader community. Whether you volunteer as a mentor, assist students with math or reading, attend a football game or volleyball match, or come to one of our fall plays or winter concerts, your engagement makes a difference. When we work together, we create opportunities for every student to succeed, and that’s something we can all be proud of.
Looking ahead, we are preparing for a significant election next month, which will bring two new board members and, for the first time in many years, an elected superintendent. While leadership may change, our focus on student outcomes will remain constant. I want to take this opportunity to thank my colleagues who will not be returning for their dedicated service and the valuable contributions they made during their time on the board.
Our district continues to offer excellent schools, technical programs, and partnerships that support students, staff, and the entire community. Every effort we make is geared toward creating meaningful outcomes and pathways for all.
Thank you again for being a part of this incredible journey. Together, we are building a brighter future for our students and our community.
Respectfully submitted,
Debbie Jordan
School Board Member, District 4
