Update March 25th, 2020

I am sure you are aware, the School District of Lee County is beginning distance learning for students on Monday, March 30th. We need the communities assistance in spreading the word. We are asking that you share the following information with your organizational stakeholders.

  1. Families with internet access should contact their child’s school to pick up a Chromebook (computer) by Friday. Only one Chromebook (computer) per household will be issued.
  2. Food is available for families at https://www.leeschools.net/parent_portal/covid-19/meal_pick_up_sites. A graphic is attached that can be shared.
  3. Click on the following link to access the Students and Families’ Distance Learning Plan https://www.leeschools.net/cms/One.aspx?portalId=676305&pageId=29569611, which is where families should begin the learning process.

These documents are translated in Spanish and Creole. If parents have questions they should reach out to help.parents@leeschools.net. It takes a village and you are an important part of this process!

Home Internet Access Information:
If you know of staff/students/friends/family that have challenges with Internet access, the carriers have announced the following accomodations for the next 60 days.
- Comcast is offering their Internet Essentials plan (for low-income families) for free for 60 days for new customers.  After 60 days it is $9.95 per month, as usual.  It's actual a good program, as it provides enough bandwidth and they configure the WiFi router for the customer.
- Comcast is opening up all of their hotspots for free.  If you have XFinity Internet, you probably already know that your router has a guest network of sorts.  Any other Comcast customer can login and use your Internet by using the public "XFinitiy WiFi" network.  Those networks are now open and don't require login.  That means if you have a neighbor or nearby business that uses XFinity, you can use the WiFi for free.
- AT&T and CenturyLink are also opening their hotspots for free.  These are generally in businesses, not in households.
- T-Mobile / Metro and Sprint have announced that they are removing data caps on smartphone data and increasing everyone's hotspot allotments by 20GBs.  This includes prepaid plans and MVNOs that are owned by those brands.
